Devin Anderson As soon as I heard the song Like Really I just had to buy the album. Then I finished listening to all the songs, and knew I made a good choice. Oddisee is one of the best hip hop artists on bandcamp. Favorite track: Like Really.

The Microscopic Giant Oddisee stay prolific, but this storytelling track shows the depth of his novelistic-like writing. Playing with time made the characters become real.
Favorite track: You Grew Up.

captainkant This is a slept on artist and album. Lyrics are critical and thought-provoking, but not to the point that they're corny or 'woke'. Worth a listen to all hip-hop fans. Favorite track: Like Really.

Digging Deep 03:24
Verse One The short timing, I've been on the life thing/ I've lived like kings/ & the men who set aside all the nice things/ Searching for what life means/ & all I found was dreams until the night came/ Rights made wrong from a point of view/ Morality is relevant to what you're going through/ On a high I'm a judge, on the low I'm like your honor/ If you only knew the karma You would light plea/ I feel sorry for the people that are probably hated/ When you take the time to understand the makings of a man/ You comprehend/ That he's the sum of circumstance/ & that evil ain't incarnate & if cornered we can all created/ I know it's easy when you’re angry just to shallow grave it/ But dig deeper for the reasons & we're all related/ To kill a cousin ain't as easy as stranger/ But the danger’s not the bullet but the anger/ Chorus So let’s get into/ deeper/ down/ Verse Two Nothing happens overnight/ Stop thinking you can make it if you copy what I'm doing right/ My mistakes ain't in the credits but that's what should get it/ Failure fueled the drive like 87 unleaded/ Never gassed up/ I'ma stay the same/ You could give me fame/ Or could take away my last buck/ Switching lanes ain't in the formula forget it/ One me & that’s the person i'ma be until I'm dead'ed/ I ain't hear to tell you everything will be fine/ Cause thinking critically is really on a decline/ Please read between the lines/ For they cross us & we hang like free time/ I'm on the incline/ Steady growing like a garden, try to tend mine/ & you go folding in the foliage of a forest/ Filled with fortune/ In the form of something for us/ That's a grape vine/ Chorus So let’s get into/ deeper/ down/

Things 03:39
Things Things, on my mind when I wake up/ Things, all my time try to take up/ if I could save up money like worry I'd be a rich man but the sorrow would plague much/ I have made up the fiction/ that I'm the center of a system/ causing the day's rust / center stage in a monologue play of/ me & the audience all in my make up/ what a view & it's all the show/ assuming what I'm doing's what you already know/ I think I'm in the middle of a palm heavy globe/ everybody trying to steal what I already own/ but oh in this life we are all but alone/ but feeling that you are is a problem condoned/ so sunlight is a spotlight that we hold/ like it's one light & we cuff tight until it's gone/ one candle on the cake for the taking/ souls set sail on a race trying to take wind/ we are faves in the chips that we place in/ I better build self anybody else cave in/ so I'm holding on to pressure like it's all mine/ that ain't sweat it's just the way I keep the floors shined/ everybody queued up for the long grind/ thinking that we're next in a short line/ Thinks I'm going through (chorus) I want a lot more things/ biggie tried to tell me what a lot more brings/ a head strong man will take a lot more strain/ seeing pleasure in the presence of slot more pain/ it's like I'm in the plot of a horror flick scene/ & i'ma run towards where I thought I heard screams/ cause things draw me like a self portrait/ blank paper trying to fill it with a lot more green/ cause things make life & life worth living/ is a life worth giving to a fight for dreams/ but when your schemes matter more than the next man/ the next mans matter more than the rest than/ we all forget we are not all things/ so i'ma take in the line/ all those behind me can chill/ but if I was the last, I'd probably be the first one to wine/ for real/ Things I'm going through (chorus) We just want to matter more/ trying to be the matador/ in a pit of bull/ trying to gather our status in the masses/ looking at the glass saying that's pitiful/ I ain't seeing what you're seeing cause your problems ain't my problems how you solve them really I don't even care/ putting pressure on my shoulders that ain't really there/ but I know you see it when you stare/ Things I'm going through (chorus)

Verse One I was born with small access to big dreams/ & detached homes/ & lazy boy couches were fit thrones/ That, would sit kings/ Lion statues on fences larger castles they guarded/ Lawns made to pastures pristine/ A race with the have nots/ Broke but the mote's where the Jag's parked/ Doing dirty work but the whips clean/ Notice the Jones's/ All of what they have is for the showing even notices on doors of for-closers/ I'm trying to get income/ & them some/ Ride around in something/ The system bumping/ The disk jumping/ I'm rolling/ A slight high/ From being able to buy/ What you shouldn't but you never knew why/ Never mind/ This the feeling I've been wanting for time/ Flying blind/ Into a wall strong drawing to shine/ Chorus I just looked at the pictures/ Didn't have a manual to build this/ Just assemble it from feeling/ By looking at the pictures/ I was given tools meant for building/ With no instruction for wielding/ But look at the picture/ It ain't even close to the description/ & yet it's works as I wish it/ By looking at the pictures/ & even though parts of it are missing/ It's still complete in depiction/ Started off trying to make a way/ then I made a wave that made a wage, that lay to waste the paper chase that i was into race/ but how you even stop this thing/ I never learned so in turn, i'ma burn out breaks/ spend it faster than the churn out makes/ but I'm a Phoenix, went from ashes to classes/ shoebox to plastic/ credit could get what ever imagined/ developing habits I can't kick/ man I was rocking cleats to a match full of baskets fast break/ broke the safe trying to bask in/ sums that wasn't real but ones & nils & they asking/ debit or credit the ladder please/ climbing into debt without a sweat when it's gradually/ had to make couple mistakes couldn't couldn't erase/ overdrawn but it turned out great/ Chorus I just looked at the pictures/ Didn't have a manual to build this/ Just assemble it from feeling/ By looking at the pictures/ I was given tools meant for building/ With no instruction for wielding/ But look at the picture/ It ain't even close to the description/ & yet it's works as I wish it/ By looking at the pictures/ & even though parts of it are missing/ It's still complete in depiction/ I maneuver by example/ Good or bad/ Triumphs & tramples/ Something couldn't grasp/ I wouldn't pass/ I would rather struggle assembling what I can do/ Look at that/ Little different but the differences make it what it isn't/ Is, is whatever I want to witness/ Behold a vision outside of the city limits/ Where time is more valued than money for the spending/ Ascended to deeper things/ Never knew reasoning/ Throwing random spices into life for the seasoning/ Without a silver spoon I couldn't taste what I was prepping/ My guessing made the wooden whip a problem to a question/ Why do my people spend more & have less than/ No seat to eat the meal that I'm responsible for cheffing/ Imagining the window was just mirroring reflection/ I turned the sideline into a seat at the concession/ Chorus I just looked at the pictures/ Didn't have a manual to build this/ Just assemble it from feeling/ By looking at the pictures/ I was given tools meant for building/ With no instruction for wielding/ But look at the picture/ It ain't even close to the description/ & yet it's works as I wish it/ By looking at the pictures/ & even though parts of it are missing/ It's still complete in depiction/

Hold It Back 04:06
I'm asked to speak but not to tell the truth/ Anonymously in the credits you can check the proof/ In the camera, innovators & creators real/ In the mirror imitators & the takers steal/ That's a practice put in action that could win awards/ Yeah we love the frauds/ But hate the ones that really come with cause/ Moment of silence for me, I don't really need applause/ Think I'm loud enough when I'm alone with all my inner thoughts/ May not never meet the people I'm inspired by/ & find out that they're really, really fake or they just kind of lied/ Kind of surprised I was able to keep my mouth shut/ This long, but/ On this song/ I'ma tell how i feel keeping quite is a crime/ Not enough fake G's doing time/ I’m not the only one to notice that/ I’m cutting all my ties/ I think it's time i stopped holding back/ Chorus Hold it back/ (Repeated) No I can’t/ I make more than my sister/ Cause I was born as a mister/ & I ain't never been to college/ & she graduated honors/ Still the bosses think that I'm a better fit, huh/ That annoys me more than cargo shorts/ & yoga pants worn at anything that's not a sport/ Dinner plans/ At eight/ & if show you up in some sneakers better call me in advance/ To say you running late/ I’m a contemporary man/ I mean take it back to what, so y'all could screw it up again/ While you’re running for an office/ I'ma run away from coffins/ Pray the policies show progress/ Before they boot it up again/ Cause everytime we restart it/ We try to push the demons deeper in the closet/ It ain't no secret they just seeping out regardless/ Keeping logic hostage/ we need to stop/ Chorus Hold it back/ (Repeated) No I can’t/ Tell them how you really feel, they label you hater/ That's the greatest trick imposters ever played on the creators/ You around here acting like we’re equal It I'm greater/ Bring up talent all you want but you can keep your resume though/ Talk is cheaper now & it is just dropping by the day though/ Take precaution/ Putting stock in Anything somebody say though/ We gone tell you anything we want to get the payload/ Don't be shocked if they come talking to you like you were a day old/ Cause every time the clocks restarted/ We try to push the demons deeper in the closet/ It ain't no secret they just seeping out regardless/ Keeping logic hostage/ We need to stop/ Chorus Hold it back/ (Repeated) No I can’t/

You Grew Up 05:05
Verse One Let me take it back to my childhood/ When six flags was still called wildwood/ Where I had every race as a neighbor/ We were all working class trying to make it out of our hood/ My best friend back then was a white kid/ we were tight he liked the same things I did/ Despite us being different colors/ We were tight as Elmer's, & we called each other brothers/ While I was trying to keep my Nikes clean/ He was trying to scuff his Chucks scuffed up/ He was grunge I was fresh we were young/ Cuss along to rap while we're sneaking into punk clubs/ But things changed when his pops got laid off/ He blamed my father for the loss of his job/ He said immigrants robbed citizens jobs/ & I better never set foot again in his yard/ As we became adults in a cult called America he got himself a job as an officer of law/ My thoughts got blacker & his views got cracker/ There was no way backwards/ To the roots at heart/ Many years part recognized him in the news/ He shot a black man that was sitting in car/ Near same park where we used to shoot hoops/ & all I blame as the cause/ Chorus You grew up/ No you didn't change/ You were made the same/ As those before you came/ Cause you grew up/ All our growing pains/ Were given like our names/ & you just bought the blame/ Cause you grew up/ Verse Two You ever have a friend that became a fanatic/ Most of you all haven't/ But if you ever did/ You'd understand the one thing they all have in common/ That somebody took advantage of their damage as a kid/ I knew a guy who's folks were professors/ Proof in the flesh that Allah was a blesser/ Grew up in a midwestern town/ Where there weren't many brown/ People he could seek reflection/ Got picked on in school during lectures/ Graduated hating everybody in his class/ Picked on because he prayed five to the east/ & he didn't eat meat that Allah said was bad/ One day a man approached him in mosque/ & changed his life when he asked him a question/ Do you ever feel your was a loss/ & what if I could teach you that life is a weapon/ Attracted strong to the feeling acceptance/ He was soon gone to delusions of a cause/ People of the present had faces of the past/ Make them easier than blast/ If he feel they did him wrong/ You can raise a child in a house full love/ But can't keep them safe from a world full of hate/ So he blew up/ The only mistake that could hold all the blame/ Is he grew up/ Chorus You grew up/ No you didn't change/ You were made the same/ As those before you came/ Cause you grew up/ All our growing pains/ Were given like our names/ & you just bought the blame/ Cause you grew up/ Verse Three My heart's a jug & when I was born it was filled with love/ It ranith over, life ran me over till I spilled the blood/ I poured the cups & left it up you to say enough/ Never ending, never quenching, I sealed it up/ Tried to change my reality but settled for, real enough/ Life is better when you're thinking lesser go on give up/ When I was younger I was so determined I would change it all/ Couldn't fly but wasn't chained to fall/ So where is it I put the blame & cause/ I grew up Chorus You grew up/ No you didn't change/ You were made the same/ As those before you came/ Cause you grew up/ All our growing pains/ Were given like our names/ & you just bought the blame/ Cause you grew up/

Rain Dance 03:52
Verse One I remembered when I discovered purpose/ I was good at something Finally worth it/ Told my father that i'ma be an artist/ Foreign parents don't understand all our newer options/ They flee their countries, protect their families, perusing progress/ They think in needs, & we think of wants, are views are parted/ I want to be like doctor Dre, they want degrees from Harvard/ An engineer that slide the fader not designing rockets/ I'm in the lab without a beaker but the speakers knocking/ Making art in broken English they mistake as nonsense/ The only language understood income/ So I got good at business plans as well as making rhythm/ It took this art so serious/ It made any girl I dated so furious/ & put tears in they eyes, I wouldn't dry/ So they turned into rain/ So many lessons I was learning through pain/ (Rain Dance) Verse Two When I was younger I was all about the ladies/ Quick to do them wrong, even quicker to call them crazy/ Cause I ain't see the harm in leading on somebody daughter/ Who wanted my commitment but instead they got a maybe/ Four or five I juggled them like I'm Barnum & Bailey/ Until my arms got tired of hugging women I'm breaking/ The less that I was working/ The more that I was flirting/ Can't be somebodies half if you ain't a completed person/ Started developing myself first/ Ain't easy to take for granted when it's self worth/ Kept promises, made money, stayed honest/ In his thick accent my father said I made progress/ Became the man that I was meant to be/ Right on time I met a women that was meant for me/ You know the feeling of Keeping your phone face up/ No interference so nothing's causing a break up/ Drama free/ Verse Three No a days I'm just trying to get paid/ Stay away from trouble & avoid an early grave/ Read a little more, speak a little less/ My competition listens & they quick to imitate/ Invited to the studio by so & so/ & everybody think that I'm the one that stole the flow/ Where here a quotable/ I ain't jealous or offended/ I'm glad to see reactions of a style that I invented/ To me be remembered means your time is finished/ And I'd rather be the reminder with a minor presence/ Not quick rise & long fall/ For long haul I'm in it so just sit tight/ Things don't grow if the ground stay dry/ I see the good things in the clouds blown by/ So when the rain comes I Presume my stance/ & if I move, it’s to do my dance/ Bloom/ Oliver St. Louis I can make it rain no matter what the time/ But I'd do it less for some peace of mind/ Reach out and you will understand/ What God put in these hands/ All we be revealed in due time/

Verse One - Olivier St. Louis Two halves sittin on a one sided saw/ roundabouts is how we get round all/ It ain't enough to have fair space between you and the hierarchy/ Wanna fight for some equality/ But what about if You the boss/ And the boss always pays the cost/ how you feel about your pockets, now/ You could never have it all and make everyone feel 10 feet tall/ The rise and the fall must occur to all/ Chorus What’s right or wrong/ What’s right or wrong/ What’s right or wrong/ (repeated) Verse Two - Oddisee I would kill to save life/ Do you see a hero or you'd rather read me rights/ My neighborhood is getting nice/ Safe to walk at night/ I can't afford to pay the price/ Sudan we eat a lot of lamb/ The latins like the chicken but what's better over rice/ I think I'm giving out advice/ But all you hear is judgement on the way you love your life/ Paper that we read not the same/ Yours framing me for the blame/ Mine see you cause all the shame/ We can't agree on a thing/ We both are beyond the games/ But we still play/ Should I fear what's on the way/ Bigger gear push on the breaks/ One man’s heart is another man’s brain/ Forever then the question will remain/ Chorus What’s right or wrong/ What’s right or wrong/ What’s right or wrong/ (repeated)

about

The prolific MC, producer and musician Oddisee’s new album ‘The Iceberg’ is a plea for humanity to dig deeper in search of understanding and common ground. His third release in just 12 months, ‘The Iceberg’ is a distillation of stereotypical tropes in hip-hop and beyond, 12 tracks about money, sex, politics, race and religion that appear superficial until his multi-dimensional lyrics unfurl to expose the complexities of individuality and identity: how we see ourselves and how others see us. Deeply soulful, and shot through with jazz, Go-go, gospel, thick r&b and hard beats, the album is a timely, poetic statement. ‘The Iceberg’ is out February 24 on Mello Music Group.

Lead single “Things” acts as a mission statement for the album, a deep dance groove with lightning-quick lyrics about “things” he’s going through. Says Oddisee, “"We all go through the trials & tribulations of life. Why is it we feel the need to individualize our shared experiences? If only we could see our concerns as others do, maybe they wouldn't be so serious."
